Dr Florian Urmetzer is the founding director of the Ecosystems, Platforms & Strategy (EPS) Research Group at the IfM.
EXPERTISE
Florian Urmetzer is an Associate Teaching Professor, interested in researching tools for strategy formulation. This focuses specifically on the concepts of Business Ecosystems and Platforms whilst branching out to the wider field of manufacturing and services.
Dr Urmetzer teaches on the Business ecosystem strategy course and takes an active role in IfM Engage consultancy projects using the IfM’s Business Ecosystem Strategy approaches which have been adapted and applied by organisations including IBM, ATOS, ABN-AMRO, CEMEX, Pearson Education, Leonardo rescue helicopters and the NHS.
His work has appeared in journals such as the Journal of Business Research, European Journal of Information Systems and Journal of Service Research.
His research team investigates industrial ecosystems from a strategic and managerial point of view. This includes supply chains, networks, digital platforms and Business Ecosystems.
Before joining Cambridge University Florian worked in Consulting for Accenture in Zürich, Switzerland and in the SAP labs as a Senior Researcher as well as for Volkswagen AG, Gartner Inc. and IBM. He holds a distinction MSc (Network Centred Computing) and a PhD, both from Reading University, School of Systems Engineering. His PhD research was concerned with the development of a tool and method that Enables Usability Evaluations in Real-time Distributed Collaborative Environments. Academically he was a visitor to the Barcelona Supercomputing Center and the Politecnico di Milano.
