IfM Engage supports UK roadmap to accelerate metamaterials commercialisation
IfM Engage has supported the development of the UK Government’s Metamaterials Commercialisation Roadmap, helping to bring together expertise from across research, industry and government to shape the future of this emerging technology in the UK.
The newly published roadmap sets out a strategic direction for unlocking the commercial potential of metamaterials, identifying opportunities to accelerate their adoption and strengthen the UK’s position in this rapidly developing field.
Bringing the metamaterials community together
Metamaterials are engineered materials designed to exhibit properties not typically found in nature. Their unique capabilities offer significant potential across a wide range of sectors, including aerospace, telecommunications, healthcare, defence and advanced manufacturing. However, translating scientific breakthroughs into commercially viable products and applications requires coordinated action across research, industry and government.
IfM Engage worked alongside the Institute of Physics (IOP), the UK Government and the Metamaterials Strategy Action Group (MSAG) to support the development of the roadmap. As part of this work, IfM Engage collaborated with the IOP to design and facilitate community consultation workshops, bringing together stakeholders from across the UK’s metamaterials ecosystem. These workshops provided an opportunity for participants to share perspectives on the challenges and opportunities facing the sector, helping to inform the roadmap’s priorities and direction.
Drawing on its expertise in technology and innovation management, industrial strategy and collaborative roadmapping, IfM Engage helped facilitate structured discussions to capture diverse perspectives and build a shared understanding of the actions needed to support commercialisation.
The engagement process recognised the importance of connecting scientific advances with industrial needs, ensuring that the roadmap reflects both the opportunities emerging from research and the practical considerations involved in bringing new technologies to market.
Turning research potential into industrial impact
The publication of the roadmap represents an important milestone for the UK’s metamaterials community, providing a foundation for greater coordination and collaboration.
While the UK has significant strengths in metamaterials research and innovation, realising their commercial potential will depend on overcoming barriers to adoption, strengthening connections between researchers and businesses, and identifying pathways to scale.
For IfM Engage, the project reflects its wider commitment to helping organisations and sectors navigate complex innovation challenges, bringing stakeholders together to develop shared priorities and translate emerging technologies into economic and societal value.
Dr Imoh Ilevbare, Deputy Head of Solution Development, and Director, STIM Consortium, IfM Engage, said:
“The UK has a real opportunity to build on its strengths in metamaterials research and turn exciting scientific advances into commercial and industrial success. Achieving this requires collaboration across the whole innovation ecosystem, bringing together researchers, businesses, policymakers and other stakeholders to identify shared priorities and practical routes forward.
“We were delighted to work with the Institute of Physics and the wider metamaterials community to support the development of this roadmap. The consultation workshops provided valuable opportunities to bring different perspectives together and help shape a shared vision for the future of metamaterials commercialisation in the UK.”
Supporting the next stage of commercialisation
The roadmap provides a platform for continued collaboration and action, helping stakeholders across the metamaterials ecosystem align their efforts and identify opportunities to accelerate progress.
By supporting its development, IfM Engage has contributed to an important step towards bridging the gap between scientific discovery and industrial application, helping to create the conditions for emerging technologies to deliver lasting impact.
