John Clarkson is Director of the Cambridge Engineering Design Centre and Co-Director of Cambridge Public Health. He is also a Governor of Cambridge University Hospitals, reflecting his longstanding interest in engineering better care.

EXPERTISE

John has worked with numerous engineering, healthcare and government organisations, specialising in:

  • Developing tools that embody engineering systems thinking in the improvement of complex systems.
  • Mapping complex socio-technical processes and systems to facilitate effective change and maximise resilience.
  • Facilitating better design with a focus on understanding user diversity.

As a research and educator, John is interested in how engineering systems approaches can be made available to health and care providers, policy makers and engineers, and be effective in delivering better products and services for all.

HIGHLIGHTS

Before returning to academia John spent seven years working with PA Consulting Group as an automation specialist. He is now Professor of Engineering Design at the University of Cambridge and of Healthcare Systems at Delft University of Technology. He is the architect of ‘Engineering Better Care’, a systems approach to health and care design and continuous improvement, developed with the Royal Academy of Engineering, Royal College of Physicians and the Academy of Medical Sciences.

John holds MA, PhD, ScD and Honorary degrees in Engineering. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2012 and the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences in 2013, and awarded the Sir Misha Black Medal for Distinguished Services to Design Education in 2018.
