Collaborative insights: NDA and IfM introduce tailored toolkit for advanced technology and innovation management

The Strategic Technology and Innovation Management Consortium (STIM) at IfM Engage has published a working paper with member company, the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA). The paper outlines a custom implementation of a roadmap-based toolkit across multiple organisational units.

The paper, co-authored by Duncan Hurlstone, John Saiz, Clemens Chaskel, Imoh Ilevbare, Clare Farrukh, Robert Phaal, and Darrell Morris, offers insights into organisational capability development and strategic focus. It focuses on assessing and enhancing technology and innovation management capabilities across six operating companies within the NDA. The unique approach merged a recognised capability assessment, developed at the IfM, with roadmapping, transforming the process from a structured assessment to an exploratory, collaborative diagnostic.

Built on insights from the Technology & Innovation Management (TIM) Diagnostic Tool, which has a history of success in multinational enterprises, the research emphasises the importance of customisation for success. It underscores the need to tailor methodologies to specific project objectives and organizational contexts. Furthermore, the report highlights the growing significance of industry-academic partnerships for continual innovation in toolkit design and delivery.

“The collaboration between the Institute for Manufacturing and the NDA represents a sustained effort to combine academic expertise with industry challenges. The outcomes from this study offer valuable insights into organisational capability development and strategic focus, emphasising the power of collaborative and customised methodologies in driving innovation,” said IfM Engage Industrial Associate Duncan Hurlstone.

Darrell Morris, Head of Technical Assurance at the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority, said:

“For a number of years, Nuclear Decommissioning Authority has been a member of the Strategic Technology and Innovation Management (STIM) consortium at the Institute for Manufacturing. It is an excellent way to access the latest academic research on technology and innovation management and engage with other industries with related challenges.”

The paper provides an overview on applying a combination of IfM’s TIM Diagnostic with Roadmapping.
