Sam Short is an industrial sustainability specialist and works with new ventures, SMEs, large organisations and policymakers to help drive the transition towards a greener, fairer and more resilient and sustainable industrial system. He has a long history with IfM as a researcher, and started working with the IfM Engage team in 2021.


In his role as an Industrial Associate, Sam assists clients with moving their organisations forward in the following key areas:

  • Reconceptualising value creation to deliver enhanced results for all stakeholders.
    • Alignment of ESG and SDG metrics with superior competitive advantage.
      • Business model innovation to embed sustainability at the core of the business.
        • System-level transformation to tackle the world’s biggest environmental and social sustainability challenges.

        As a research practitioner in industrial sustainability, Sam has a deep interest in the role industry can play in rising to the challenges of climate change, population growth, resource depletion, biodiversity loss, and delivering inclusive development.


        Sam holds a PhD in Industrial Sustainability, and an MEng in Manufacturing Engineering from the University of Cambridge, and an MBA from Queen’s University in Canada. He is a Chartered Mechanical Engineer.

        Sam has spent the past decade in academia and consultancy, developing a deep understanding of global sustainability and business strategy across a broad range of industries. He has worked with several start-up initiatives in renewable energy, housing and transportation sectors. Prior to this, Sam spent fifteen years in the Aerospace industry, living and working extensively across Europe, the Americas, and Asia. His industrial experience includes production management, new product development, supply chain management, industrial development strategy, business development, and general management.
