Technology and Innovation Management Diagnostic (TIM Diagnostic), to support technology intensive organisations in quickly and effectively reviewing their TIM system.

This diagnostic tool has been designed in response to issues inherent in other assessment tools, serving as a first step to identifying, exploring, shaping and implementing solutions, to tackle technology and innovation management challenges or weaknesses faced by organisations.

WHY USE THE TIM DIAGNOSTIC?

The TIM Diagnostic overcomes limitations of other innovation and technology management assessment tools:

• Links innovation and technology activities in the same assessment, essential for technology- and manufacturing-based organisations, but is often missing from other assessment tools.
• Provides context specific advice, approaches and tools that can support the improvement of areas identified as priorities as a result of the assessment.
• Is based on a robust technology and innovation framework, developed by the IfM, so you can be confident you are reviewing the right areas of your TIM system.
• Is light touch delivering actionable insights in a very short space of time.

A TIME-EFFICIENT AND ROBUST APPROACH

The diagnostic comprises over 90 questions across three broad areas that need to be considered when reviewing your organisation’s TIM system.

SME Business strategy

Strategy

Investigate your innovation and technology strategy and importantly, how it links and supports your organisation’s overall business strategy.

Automation assessment

System

Examine the fundamental technology and innovation management processes of technology identification, selection, acquisition, exploitation and protection.

Bring stakeholders together

People and organisation

Focus on the organisation’s leadership and management style, organisational culture and the management of competences, and their appropriateness for desired ITM and, ultimately, business performance.

“The IfM’s technology and innovation management process helped to shine a light and identify where we needed to improve and shift our focus away from product innovation into capability development and longer-term strategic planning.”

OUR APPROACH

Organisations generally go through a process of three steps to get actionable insights using the TIM Diagnostic.

Stage 1: Data collection

Multiple middle- to senior-level innovation/technology specialists take the survey, either online or face-to-face, considering questions across all of key TIM themes and areas.

Stage 2: Data evaluation

Key stakeholders review the indicative results identifying and agreeing on key performance weaknesses and strengths against defined organisational and TIM goals.

Stage 3: Prioritisation and planning

Through a facilitated workshop, key stakeholders work to identify and select projects that either address weaknesses or capitalise on strengths of capabilities identified in stage 2.

Projects account for the present and desired maturity of the capability, and link to tools and approaches that support organisations in planning how to deliver on the vision.
